59th Division arrived in France in February, 1917 and by the beginning of April, 1917, the 2/5th Leicestershire battalion of 177 Brigade were holding the line at Hesbecourt, to the east of Péronne. On 9th April, the day on which Edward Chandler was killed, the battalion sent out patrols and occupied some enemy positions that had been abandoned. |
